How to Care for Hair Extensions: The Ultimate Guide

How do you wash and care for hair extensions? With the right routine, human hair extensions stay long-lasting and naturally beautiful. To keep the hair smooth, bouncy and shiny, you need to wash your extensions correctly and use the right products. Here you will find everything that matters – from washing technique to the ingredients you should avoid.

1. How to wash hair extensions correctly

To care for your extensions properly, you need to wash them regularly. For clip-in extensions this is enough after roughly every 10-15 uses; permanent extensions need cleaning more often. Before washing, gently detangle the hair with your fingers and brush it thoroughly from the ends up to the roots.

It is best to wash your hair extensions upright in the shower. Carefully shampoo only the scalp and let the foam run down over the lengths. A treatment on the lengths and ends (2-5 min) adds extra smoothness. Make sure conditioner never touches the attachment points!

2. No-gos in extension care

3. What shampoo for hair extensions is best?

The best shampoo for hair extensions is free from silicones, alcohol and oils. These ingredients can massively impair the durability of the attachment points (tapes or bondings) and make the hair greasy at the roots. A mild, moisturising formula cleans the scalp without drying out the lengths.

Our specially formulated hair extension care range – shampoo, conditioner and hair oil – is developed to work with bonds, tapes and rings, giving both your natural hair and the extensions intensive moisture.

4. Hair extension care routine

Brush your hair thoroughly twice a day with a special extension brush. Check the attachment points every 4 weeks. If strands become loose, have them moved up promptly by a hairdresser or a friend. Read more on why extensions get dry and matted.

5. Styling with hair extensions

You can blow-dry, straighten or curl your hair extensions. Always use a medium heat setting to avoid drying out the human hair. The gentlest method is air-drying. When using styling products, make sure they contain no alcohol or oils that could attack the connections.

6. Can you dye extensions?

Synthetic hair and Standard human hair should not be dyed. For Premium human hair, colour adjustment is possible because the cuticle layer is intact. We still recommend choosing the right shade directly from our wide range of colours to protect the structure – see our guide on dyeing and bleaching extensions.

7. Sports with hair extensions

Sport is no obstacle. Always tie your hair in a braid or bun (for example a high bun with tapes) to avoid friction and matting caused by sweat. This keeps the attachment points safely protected.

8. Saltwater and chlorine

Chlorine and salt strip moisture from the hair. When swimming, it is best to pin your hair up. Should it get wet anyway: rinse immediately with fresh water and then use a nourishing hair mask to neutralise salt residues.

9. Sleeping with extensions

Brush your hair thoroughly before bed and tie it into a loose braid or bun. This prevents mechanical friction on the pillow. Alternatively, a silk turban protects your hair extensions particularly gently.

Great tapes

I am very satisfied, ordered yesterday, arrived today. I'm just testing them, my hair is great. My 11-year-old daughter put 10 tabs in for me; it was clearly difficult for her, but I am very satisfied.

Love these extensions

I've been a customer for years and this is my second time buying the black, straight ones. I'm very satisfied! I used to always buy the straight ones in burgundy, and those were great too!
